The African Union has backed a broader discussion on migration, a South African government \u200bofficial said on Thursday, after Ghana made \u200ca proposal to place xenophobic violence in South Africa on the agenda of an upcoming AU meeting.<\/p>\n

Clayson Monyela, a \u2060South African foreign affairs official, said on \u200bX that Pretoria had defeated an attempt to “single out & \u200bisolate” the country.<\/p>\n
“The AU will discuss the migration issue broadly & look at the ‘Pull & Push’ factors,” Monyela wrote, referring to \u200bconditions that drive people to leave their countries \u200band those that draw them elsewhere.<\/p>\n
Over the past few months\u00a0anti-migrant \u200cprotests\u00a0\u2060have taken place in South Africa.<\/p>\n
Ghana\u00a0repatriated\u00a0hundreds of its citizens ahead of a June 30 deadline set by a South African anti-migrant movement for \u200bundocumented foreigners to \u200bleave.<\/p>\n
Local media \u2060reported that the AU had rejected a proposal from Ghana that would \u200bhave meant xenophobic violence in South Africa \u200bwas \u2060discussed as a stand-alone agenda item at the body’s mid-year coordination meeting in October.<\/p>\n
