Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has launched a \u200bnew political party, formalising his \u200cbreak with former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko and the ruling Pastef \u200bparty that swept him to \u200bpower in 2024.<\/p>\n
Faye unveiled his \u2060Kiiraay \u2014 Republican Patriots party at \u200ba gathering in the capital, Dakar, on Saturday, describing it as “the majority party in this country”. Kiiraay means “shield” \u200bin the local Wolof language.<\/p>\n
Faye \u200band Sonko, once the twin faces of \u200cSenegal’s \u2060anti-establishment movement, have been engaged in a months-long power struggle.<\/p>\n
Faye dismissed Sonko in May, but \u200bSonko later \u200bbecame \u2060speaker of the National Assembly and remains the \u200bleader of Pastef, which \u200bretains \u2060a large majority in parliament.<\/p>\n
