German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Berlin’s commitment on Wednesday to supporting Nigeria on security as it \u200bbattles militant groups, and said violence in the Sahel \u200cthreatened all coastal states in the region.<\/p>\n
He also said Germany would provide 10 million euros ($11.4 million) this year to support the return and \u200breintegration of people displaced from communities once controlled by \u200bBoko Haram and Islamic State-linked militants.<\/p>\n
Islamic State and \u2060al Qaeda affiliates that operate in the Sahel region have \u200bexpanded their presence in Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, and international \u200bconcerns over the increased instability in the region are growing.<\/p>\n
“The spillover effects of the crisis in the Sahel are increasingly threatening all coastal states in \u200bthe region,” Wadephul said in Abuja after talks with \u200bNigerian Foreign Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu.<\/p>\n
“Nigeria has stood on the front line in the \u200cfight \u2060against terrorism and violent extremism,” he said.<\/p>\n
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said sustained international partnerships were essential to addressing terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime and other security threats facing West Africa.<\/p>\n
The two ministers \u200balso discussed expanding \u200beconomic ties between \u2060their countries.<\/p>\n
Wadephul, on his first visit to Nigeria, described the country as a key strategic \u200bpartner for Germany, citing its role as West \u200bAfrica’s \u2060largest economy and a leading political force within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).<\/p>\n
He said bilateral trade grew by about 10% \u2060last \u200byear, with Nigeria remaining Germany’s second-largest \u200btrading partner in sub-Saharan Africa. More than 100 German companies currently operate in \u200bthe country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
