President Donald Trump praised Nigerian President Bola Tinubu for his actions against \u200bviolence, according to a letter released by \u200cNigeria’s presidency on Wednesday, in contrast to the U.S. leader’s threats late last year over treatment of that \u200bcountry’s Christians.<\/p>\n
Trump said he appreciated Tinubu’s “decisive leadership \u200bon behalf of the Nigerian people” and applauded \u2060his efforts to address “the violence affecting Christian \u200bcommunities,” according to the letter, which was dated \u200bJuly 6.<\/p>\n
“It is a true honor to stand with you in the fight against terrorists and to make the Federal \u200bRepublic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” \u200bTrump wrote.<\/p>\n
The letter signals a warming of ties between Abuja \u200cand \u2060Washington since Trump last November accused the government of\u00a0failing to protect Christians\u00a0from extremist violence and threatened to cut aid to Nigeria and take possible \u200bmilitary action.<\/p>\n
Nigeria \u200brejected the \u2060allegations, saying insecurity affected citizens of all faiths.<\/p>\n
According to the Nigerian presidency, \u200bthe two countries established a joint security \u200bworking \u2060group last year to expand intelligence sharing, training, and operations against militant groups.<\/p>\n
