The West African bloc ECOWAS urged Guinea-Bissau’s military-led government to unconditionally release all detained \u200bpolitical figures, including opposition leader Domingos Simoes Pereira, \u200cat the conclusion of a summit meeting of heads of state in Sierra Leone, a statement said.<\/p>\n
The release \u200bof all political prisoners could “bolster the credibility of \u200bthe transition process,” ECOWAS said in a \u2060statement released late on Monday. Guinea-Bissau’s leaders took \u200bpower in a coup last November and adopted a \u200bone-year\u00a0transitional charter\u00a0the following month.<\/p>\n
Pereira, a former prime minister and the leader of the revolutionary PAIGC party, was ordered \u200bback to prison on\u00a0July 10, his family told \u200bReuters last week. He was previously detained on the day of \u200cthe \u2060coup last year but then moved to house arrest in February, in an apparent attempt to appease ECOWAS. Pereira has been accused of economic crimes \u200band involvement \u200bin an \u2060alleged coup attempt in October 2025, which he denies.<\/p>\n
The West African country will \u200bhold a constitutional referendum on August \u200b30, followed \u2060by general elections on December 6, 2026, according to the ECOWAS statement.<\/p>\n
Guinea-Bissau’s government has not formally announced \u2060the \u200belection dates.<\/p>\n
