The head of Africa’s top public health agency said he had written to U.S. Health \u200bSecretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. asking him \u200cto lift Ebola-related travel restrictions on Uganda since the country has reported no new infections in about a month.<\/p>\n
“There is \u200bno reason for the U.S. to continue \u200bwith this travel restriction,” Africa Centres for Disease \u2060Control and Prevention Director-General Jean Kaseya told a \u200bconference in Accra, Ghana’s capital, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Kaseya urged African \u200bcountries to support his letter to Kennedy as a sign the continent is supporting nations affected by the Ebola outbreak, \u200bthe epicentre of which is in Democratic Republic \u200bof Congo.<\/p>\n
Uganda’s last Ebola patient was\u00a0discharged\u00a0on July 16, triggering a \u200c42-day \u2060countdown after which it can be declared free of the virus, according to World Health Organization guidelines.<\/p>\n
Uganda has reported 20 Ebola cases so far, compared to \u200bover 2,400 in \u200bCongo.<\/p>\n
“It’s time \u2060today to lift the status (travel restrictions), and then we’ll continue to support DRC \u200bon the challenge they are facing,” Kaseya \u200bcontinued.<\/p>\n
The \u2060U.S. is restricting entry for all travellers who were recently in Congo and some travellers who recently visited \u2060Uganda \u200bor South Sudan. It imposed entry \u200brestrictions in May before\u00a0tightening them\u00a0last week.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
