Member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) signed an intergovernmental \u200bagreement on Sunday in Freetown backing the Nigeria-Morocco \u200cAtlantic gas pipeline, according to a Moroccan and Nigerian statement.<\/p>\n
The pipeline is designed to transport up to 30 billion cubic \u200bmetres (bcm) of natural gas a year from Nigeria \u200band west Africa through 13 West African countries \u2060to Morocco, according to a joint statement by \u200bMorocco\u2019s hydrocarbons and mining agency ONHYM and Nigeria’s state \u200boil firm NNPC.<\/p>\n
Of that capacity, 15 bcm a year will be made available to Moroccan and European markets through an existing \u200bpipeline that links Morocco to Spain, the statement said.<\/p>\n
Agreed \u200ba decade ago, between the Moroccan King and the Nigerian president, \u200cthe \u2060pipeline would run 6,900 km on a hybrid offshore-onshore route and is estimated to cost $25 billion.<\/p>\n
The project completed its feasibility study and front-end engineering design (FEED) stages.<\/p>\n
In \u200bApril, ONHYM told \u200bReuters the \u2060pipeline was designed to spur economic integration across West Africa by expanding electricity generation \u200band facilitating industrial and mining development, while \u200bhelping \u2060Morocco position itself as an energy bridge between Africa and Europe.<\/p>\n
