The United Nations Security Council has imposed sanctions on leaders of armed groups \u200boperating in eastern Congo including Rwandan-backed AFC\/M23 \u200crebels and the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR), which fights alongside the Congolese army.<\/p>\n
The conflict \u200bin eastern Congo is rooted in the \u200bfallout from neighbouring Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.<\/p>\n
Fighting in \u2060eastern Congo intensified last year when the \u200bAFC\/M23 rebel group, which the United Nations and \u200bWestern governments say is backed by Rwanda, seized large swathes of eastern Congo.<\/p>\n
Rwanda denies backing the rebels.<\/p>\n
The U.N. Security \u200bCouncil said on Thursday a committee that \u200boversees an arms embargo on Democratic Republic of the \u200cCongo \u2060added six individuals and two entities to its sanctions list.<\/p>\n
Among them were Corneille Nangaa, leader of the AFC rebel alliance that also includes M23, \u200bJohn Imani \u200bNzenze, M23 \u2060chief of intelligence, and Gustave Kubwayo, an FDLR commander.<\/p>\n
Nzenze and Kubwayo \u200bwere sanctioned\u00a0last month\u00a0by the United States \u200bwhich \u2060accused them of driving the conflict in the east despite mediation efforts by Washington.<\/p>\n
