Scientists have identified a new species of monkey in Democratic Republic of \u200bCongo’s rainforest, distinguished by patches of \u200clight-colored skin around its mouth, Florida Atlantic University said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The discovery marks \u200bonly the fifth new monkey species \u200bidentified in Africa in the last \u206075 years, according to the statement \u200bissued on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The species known by locals \u200bas “Likweli” was named Colobus congoensis by scientists.<\/p>\n
Small in size, the black monkey has a distinctive “mask-like \u200bappearance” with a vivid orange-cream patch \u200bsurrounding its mouth and nose.<\/p>\n
The newly identified primate’s roaring \u200cpossesses \u2060a distinct acoustic structure, the research showed.<\/p>\n
“This discovery reinforces how much biodiversity remains undocumented in the Central Congo Basin,” \u200bsaid John \u200bHart, a \u2060conservation scientist from the Lukuru Wildlife Research Foundation.<\/p>\n
