Fifteen of those were \u2060people infected in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo, the \u200bepicentre of the outbreak, who then travelled to Uganda.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike \u200bin Congo, where cases are still surging, Uganda has not reported a new case since June 22.<\/p>\n<p>Congo reported 62 new cases \u200bon Thursday, taking its total number of confirmed infections \u200bto 2,073, though the World Health Organization has said the true \u200ctally \u2060could be\u00a0at least double that.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today, Uganda has discharged the last Ebola patient, a Congolese national who has successfully recovered and (is) ready to be with his family,&#8221; \u200bUganda&#8217;s health ministry \u200bsaid in \u2060a post on X.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, government spokesperson Alan Kasujja said the patient would \u200bbe released from an isolation unit at \u200bthe \u2060Mulago National Referral Hospital in the capital Kampala.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uganda starts counting down,&#8221; he wrote on X. &#8220;If 42 days pass without \u2060a \u200bsingle new case, WHO guidelines \u200bstipulate that we will be declared Ebola free.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Uganda discharged its last remaining Ebola \u200bpatient on Thursday, triggering a 42-day countdown after \u200cwhich it can be declared free of the virus, the East African nation&#8217;s health ministry said.
