Senegal’s top court has struck down changes to the country’s constitution that would have \u200baltered the balance of power in government, \u200cruling against an amendment adopted by parliament\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n
Thursday’s Constitutional Court ruling found that the amendment adopted by the \u200bassembly on June 29 was “contrary to the \u200bConstitution”.<\/p>\n
The proposed changes included a provision prohibiting \u2060a sitting president from serving as leader of \u200ba political party.<\/p>\n
Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye said\u00a0last \u200bweek\u00a0he was planning to set up his own political party.<\/p>\n
The push for constitutional reform has been driven by \u200bthe ruling Pastef party, led by parliament speaker \u200band former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko.<\/p>\n
Critics of the proposed reforms \u200chave \u2060said the amendment was an attempted power grab by Sonko, whom Faye dismissed as head of government in May.<\/p>\n
The Constitutional Court said Faye had \u200basked it \u200bto review \u2060lawmakers’ procedures in order to detect violations that would invalidate the reform.<\/p>\n
The political \u200bupheaval related to the split between \u200bformer \u2060allies Faye and Sonko could complicate Senegal’s efforts to resolve a crisis stemming from the disclosure of \u2060misreported \u200bdebt in 2024.<\/p>\n
