Eleven more migrants deported by the Trump administration under a \u200bpolicy of sending them to third \u200ccountries arrived in Eswatini from the United States on Wednesday, a U.S. lawyer following the case said.<\/p>\n
The arrivals \u200bbring to 29 the number sent to \u200bthe southern African country under a $5.1 million \u2060agreement that has been challenged by lawyers \u200bwho say deportees are being detained despite having \u200balready served sentences for crimes committed in the United States.<\/p>\n
Alma David, a lawyer for some of the original \u200bdeportees sent to Eswatini last year — and who \u200bis in touch with local prison sources there — confirmed \u200cthe \u2060arrival to Reuters by text message.<\/p>\n
Of the 29 deportees sent from the United States to Eswatini, only two have been released and repatriated, \u200bone to \u200bJamaica and \u2060the other to Cambodia.<\/p>\n
An Eswatini government spokesperson did not immediately respond \u200bto a request for comment.<\/p>\n
The detainees had \u200balready \u2060been transported to Eswatini’s notorious Matsapha correctional facility, David said.<\/p>\n
The Trump administration has also \u2060deported \u200bmigrants to other countries in \u200bAfrica, Asia and the Americas under the policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
