Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa has signed \u200binto law legislation that extends his \u200cterm in office by two years to 2030, government spokesperson Nick Mangwana said on \u200bTuesday.<\/p>\n
Both\u00a0houses\u00a0of the Southern African nation’s \u200bparliament\u00a0approved the bill\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n
“Signed, sealed \u2060and delivered \u2013 it is now law,” \u200bMangwana said in a post on X, \u200bwith a copy of the legislation attached to it.<\/p>\n
The bill includes a provision for the president \u200bto be elected by parliament rather \u200bthan by direct popular vote.<\/p>\n
Signs that Mnangagwa, 83, \u200cwanted \u2060to remain in power beyond the end of his second term in 2028 first emerged about two years ago, when \u200bhis supporters \u200bbegan \u2060chanting slogans at ZANU-PF rallies calling for more time for \u200bhim to complete his agenda.<\/p>\n
