{"id":21384,"date":"2026-07-08T14:15:27","date_gmt":"2026-07-08T14:15:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21384"},"modified":"2026-07-08T14:15:27","modified_gmt":"2026-07-08T14:15:27","slug":"ghana-delays-south-africa-meetings-over-anti-migrant-violence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21384\/ghana-delays-south-africa-meetings-over-anti-migrant-violence\/","title":{"rendered":"Ghana delays South Africa meetings over anti-migrant violence"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana has postponed bilateral meetings with South Africa that were planned for next month because of a surge in\u00a0anti-migrant violence\u00a0in the \u200bcountry, Ghana&#8217;s government spokesperson said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu told \u200clocal radio station Joy FM the violence would probably have overshadowed the August meetings, which were set to be hosted by Ghana and co-chaired by South Africa&#8217;s President \u200bCyril Ramaphosa and Ghana&#8217;s President John Dramani Mahama.<\/p>\n<p>It would be better \u200bfor the two sides to meet &#8220;when matters settle,&#8221; Kwakye Ofosu \u2060said.<\/p>\n<p>Ramaphosa&#8217;s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya told Reuters the meetings of the South Africa-Ghana \u200bBi-National Commission had been discussed months ago and Johannesburg learned about Ghana&#8217;s intention \u200bto defer them when it sought to confirm them.<\/p>\n<p>South Africa has seen waves of anti-migrant protests over the past few months which have been mostly peaceful but at times \u200bturned violent, with attacks on foreign nationals and looting of foreign-owned shops.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana\u00a0repatriated\u00a0\u200bhundreds of its citizens ahead of a June 30 &#8220;deadline&#8221; set by a South African anti-migrant \u200cmovement \u2060for undocumented foreigners to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Kwakye Ofosu said Ghana valued its relationship with South Africa and it would be appropriate for Ramaphosa to visit &#8220;when the issue of xenophobic attacks no longer hangs over such discussions&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Magwenya said South Africa and \u200bGhana would &#8220;continue to \u200bengage through diplomatic \u2060channels to identify a mutually convenient date for the next session of the commission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ghana&#8217;s foreign ministry said last week \u200bthat a Ghanaian national was shot dead in Cape \u200bTown&#8217;s Khayelitsha \u2060township during anti-immigrant demonstrations on June 30.<\/p>\n<p>South African police said they had no record of such an incident on that day.<\/p>\n<p>They said a Ghanaian national was \u2060killed a \u200bday earlier in a different Cape Town \u200bsettlement but that incident was believed to be linked to extortion, not anti-migrant sentiment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ghana has postponed bilateral meetings with South Africa that were planned for next month because of a surge in\u00a0anti-migrant violence\u00a0in the \u200bcountry, Ghana&#8217;s government spokesperson said on Tuesday.
