{"id":21375,"date":"2026-07-07T10:54:15","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T10:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21375"},"modified":"2026-07-07T10:54:15","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T10:54:15","slug":"nigeria-to-investigate-tech-firms-over-news-content-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21375\/nigeria-to-investigate-tech-firms-over-news-content-use\/","title":{"rendered":"Nigeria to investigate tech firms over news content use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the country\u2019s competition regulator to investigate major technology companies over alleged anti-competitive \u200bpractices and unauthorised use of news content, the Federal Competition \u200cand Consumer Protection Commission said late on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>The FCCPC said the inquiry would examine complaints by Nigerian media groups against companies including Meta, Alphabet, X and generative \u200bartificial intelligence platforms operating in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The complaint was submitted by \u200bthe Nigerian Press Organisation, which represents newspaper owners, journalists\u2019 unions, \u2060broadcasters and online publishers.<\/p>\n<p>Alphabet, Meta and X did not immediately respond \u200bto requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p>The investigation could become a test of Nigeria\u2019s ability \u200bto regulate global digital platforms whose search, social media and AI products have transformed how news is distributed and monetised.<\/p>\n<p>The FCCPC said it would examine allegations of market \u200bdominance, anti-competitive conduct, the unauthorised extraction or commercial use of copyrighted \u200bnews and broadcast content, and the use of journalistic material to train generative AI \u200cmodels.<\/p>\n<p>The \u2060regulator said the investigation did not presume wrongdoing and that all affected parties would have an opportunity to present information before any conclusions were reached.<\/p>\n<p>Regulators in several countries have examined whether large technology companies should \u200bcompensate publishers for \u200bcontent used to \u2060attract users, train AI systems or generate advertising revenue.<\/p>\n<p>In Africa, South Africa\u2019s competition regulator last year secured concessions \u200bfrom\u00a0Google and YouTube, including a 688 million rand ($42 \u200bmillion) media \u2060support package, following a market inquiry into digital platforms and news media.<\/p>\n<p>France\u00a0fined Google\u00a0\u20ac500 million in 2021 over failures in negotiations with news publishers and \u2060breaches linked \u200bin part to the use of publisher \u200bcontent by AI systems.\u00a0Australia\u00a0and\u00a0Canada\u00a0have also introduced bargaining frameworks that resulted in payment agreements \u200bbetween technology companies and publishers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has directed the country\u2019s competition regulator to investigate major technology companies over alleged anti-competitive \u200bpractices and unauthorised use of news content, the Federal Competition \u200cand Consumer Protection Commission said late on Monday.
