Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye is planning to set up his own political party, \u200ba coalition supporting him said, the latest evidence \u200cof a durable split with his recently ousted prime minister.<\/p>\n
Faye has instructed senior adviser Aminata Toure to establish a \u200btask force charged with creating the party, \u200bsaid a statement from the pro-Faye coalition issued \u2060late on Friday.<\/p>\n
Faye has until now been a \u200bmember of the ruling Pastef party, led by Ousmane \u200bSonko, who was prime minister until Faye ousted him in May, capping months of tensions between the two leaders.<\/p>\n
Sonko has \u200bsince become speaker of the National Assembly, where \u200bhe has been pushing for constitutional reforms that would, among \u200cother \u2060things, bar a sitting president from serving as leader of a political party.<\/p>\n
Lawmakers voted in favour of the changes\u00a0last week, but Faye has decided to put \u200bthem to \u200ba referendum. \u2060It is unclear when the referendum will take place.<\/p>\n
The political upheaval is unfolding \u200bas Senegal struggles to grapple with a \u200bcrisis \u2060stemming from the revelation of misreported debt under the previous government.<\/p>\n
