{"id":21356,"date":"2026-07-05T13:11:45","date_gmt":"2026-07-05T13:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21356"},"modified":"2026-07-05T13:11:45","modified_gmt":"2026-07-05T13:11:45","slug":"insurgents-stage-coordinated-attacks-on-army-positions-across-mali","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21356\/insurgents-stage-coordinated-attacks-on-army-positions-across-mali\/","title":{"rendered":"Insurgents stage coordinated attacks on army positions across Mali"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Insurgents staged attacks on army \u200bpositions across Mali on Saturday, including in a northern town where government and Russian fighters are based and in a town \u200csouth of the capital Bamako, the latest threat to the landlocked Sahel nation&#8217;s embattled leaders.<\/p>\n<p>The assault stretched from the northern cities and towns of Anefis, Aguelhoc and Gao to Sevare in central Mali and Kenioroba in the south, the Malian armed forces said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for a Tuareg-led rebel group, the Azawad Liberation Front (FLA), told \u200bReuters it was involved in the attacks.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement published later on Saturday, the regional al Qaeda affiliate,\u00a0Jama&#8217;at Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimin (JNIM), \u200balso claimed responsibility, saying it had struck and seized control of at least seven positions manned by the \u2060army or other pro-government fighters. Reuters could not independently verify JNIM&#8217;s claim.<\/p>\n<p>The FLA and JNIM teamed up for a coordinated, high-profile operation in April that \u200bhit the airport in Bamako and killed the defence minister.<\/p>\n<p>Mali&#8217;s army said in a statement that soldiers had repelled Saturday&#8217;s attacks and that the situation \u200bwas &#8220;totally under control&#8221;, adding that 20 &#8220;terrorists&#8221; had been killed in Sevare and six in Gao. It said one pro-government fighter was killed in Gao and four others were injured.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ROCKET ATTACKS AND EXPLOSIONS REPORTED<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The FLA&#8217;s spokesperson, Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane, said the group&#8217;s fighters had entered Anefis, in the northeastern Kidal region. Government and Russian troops were deployed \u200bthere after the April attacks, having previously been driven from the strategic town of Kidal. Reuters could not independently verify the claim.<\/p>\n<p>In Gao, a \u200blocal official said gunfire and rocket attacks targeting a military camp had continued since before dawn, though it was not immediately clear who was responsible.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;No one could go \u200cout this \u2060morning&#8230; the Malian Armed Forces have blocked all the streets. We&#8217;re in our homes,&#8221; a Gao resident said. &#8220;The noise was so intense it felt like the roof was going to collapse.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In Sevare, a resident told Reuters that early-morning gunfire was followed by four large explosions in the west of the city at around 8 a.m. local time (0800 GMT). Even heavier detonations were heard in the town at around 10 a.m., the resident said.<\/p>\n<p>The sources spoke \u200bon condition of anonymity for safety \u200breasons. Kenioroba is home to a \u2060prison holding members of Mali&#8217;s political opposition. A diplomatic source and a security source said the prison was attacked, though one said security forces repelled the assailants.<\/p>\n<p>A government spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for \u200bcomment.<\/p>\n<p><strong>INSECURITY PERSISTS DESPITE PROMISES FROM MILITARY LEADERS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The attacks highlight the failure of Mali&#8217;s military leaders, who seized \u200bpower in coups in \u20602020 and 2021, to deliver the improved security they promised.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2024, JNIM attacked a paramilitary police training school near the Bamako airport, killing about 70 people. More recently, it carried out a fuel blockade that has starved the capital&#8217;s residents and businesses of power and supplies.<\/p>\n<p>Mali&#8217;s government has recently pursued closer \u2060ties with \u200bWashington, which has sought to rebuild cooperation on security and explore mining opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Russia, whose Africa \u200bCorps forces are backing the government, vowed to stand by Mali after the attacks in April.<\/p>\n<p>Jihadist violence has also rocked neighbouring Burkina Faso\u00a0and Niger, which like Mali have turned to Russia \u200bfor security assistance.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Insurgents staged attacks on army \u200bpositions across Mali on Saturday, including in a northern town where government and Russian fighters are based and in a town \u200csouth of the capital Bamako, the latest threat to the landlocked Sahel nation&#8217;s embattled leaders.
