{"id":21312,"date":"2026-07-02T16:35:00","date_gmt":"2026-07-02T16:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=21312"},"modified":"2026-07-02T16:35:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-02T16:35:00","slug":"us-to-give-tanzania-1-3-billion-under-five-year-health-pact","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/21312\/us-to-give-tanzania-1-3-billion-under-five-year-health-pact\/","title":{"rendered":"US to give Tanzania $1.3 billion under five-year health pact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tanzania to invest more than $1.3 billion in \u200bits health sector over the next five years, the latest \u200cin a series of deals that have caused controversy in some African countries.<\/p>\n<p>The agreement, signed late on Wednesday, is similar to those struck with countries including Rwanda, \u200bKenya, and\u00a0Uganda\u00a0under U.S. President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;America First Global Health \u200bStrategy&#8221;, designed to make poorer nations more self-reliant as the \u2060U.S. has\u00a0dismantled foreign aid programmes.<\/p>\n<p>The pact says that in return for \u200bmore than $1.3 billion in investment, Tanzania has committed to investing $1.8 billion in \u200bthe health sector over the same period, according to a statement from the U.S. embassy in Tanzania.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This joint investment reflects both countries&#8217; commitment to preventing the spread of \u200binfectious diseases, and strengthening Tanzania\u2019s capacity to finance, manage, and self-sustain \u200bessential health services,&#8221; the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>In some countries the pacts have run into resistance \u200cover \u2060concerns about conditions like allowing access to minerals and sharing personal health data and bio materials.<\/p>\n<p>Zambia\u00a0has rejected\u00a0demands that such a deal be tied to U.S. access to Zambian minerals while in Kenya a court \u200bin December\u00a0suspended part\u00a0\u200bof its deal \u2060until it hears a data privacy case filed by a consumer protection group.<\/p>\n<p>Tanzanian Health Minister Mohamed Mchengerwa said \u200bthe agreement did not include the sharing of \u200blaboratory samples \u2060with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We did not enter into a specimen-sharing agreement,&#8221; Mchengerwa said during the signing ceremony, according to a video on the health ministry&#8217;s \u2060Instagram account.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tanzania&#8217;s \u200bspecimens including those of outbreak, epidemic and \u200bpandemics potential will be tested, stored and governed here in Tanzania,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The United States has signed a memorandum of understanding with Tanzania to invest more than $1.3 billion in \u200bits health sector over the next five years, the latest \u200cin a series of deals that have caused controversy in some African countries.
