Kenyan police opened \u200cfire at a protest in Nairobi against reported abductions on Tuesday, killing at least one person, two witnesses told Reuters.<\/div>\n
The protest in \u200bthe Mathare neighbourhood was triggered by the reported \u200babduction of a businessman this month and came \u2060amid mounting concern over kidnappings of critics and crackdowns \u200bduring protests in Kenya.<\/div>\n
Kenyan police were not immediately available for \u200bcomment on Tuesday.<\/div>\n

“I have seen one person dead and two have gunshot wounds at a hospital in Mathare,” said Wanjira Wanjiru, co-founder \u200bof Mathare Social Justice Centre, who was at the \u200bprotest.<\/div>\n
Adel Nduba, a resident of Mathare, said the protest was called \u200cbecause \u2060his brother had not been seen since he was arrested a week ago.<\/div>\n
Two years ago, at least 60 people were killed in a crackdown by security forces according to \u200bthe Kenya \u200bNational Commission \u2060on Human Rights after protesters breached parliament grounds during a rally against proposed tax hikes.<\/div>\n
Kenya’s \u200bPresident William Ruto has acknowledged “instances of excessive \u200band \u2060extrajudicial actions by members of the security services”. He said earlier this month that 2 billion Kenyan shillings ($15.5 million) had \u2060been \u200bset aside for victims of protest-related \u200babuses.<\/div>\n
