Burkina Faso said on Friday it had\u00a0severed links\u00a0with \u200bits former colonial ruler after \u200byears of worsening ties over \u2060security, sovereignty and alleged foreign \u200binterference.<\/p>\n
“France regrets this hostile and unfounded \u200bdecision, which illustrates the worrying drift of the Burkinabe authorities,” the French \u200bforeign ministry said in a \u200bstatement.<\/p>\n
It urged French nationals in Burkina Faso “to \u200cexercise \u2060heightened vigilance”.<\/p>\n
The West African country has been battling an Islamist insurgency that has spread from Mali \u200band killed \u200bthousands \u2060and displaced millions in the region over the \u200bpast decade.<\/p>\n
