UNICEF and Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, said on Wednesday they are seeking information from vaccine developers and manufacturers \u200bon plans to develop a vaccine against the \u200cBundibugyo strain of Ebola.<\/p>\n
The move follows Gavi’s commitment of up to $40 million to support faster vaccine access, including funding to help scale \u200bup manufacturing and ensure doses are available if candidates \u200bprove effective.<\/p>\n
UNICEF said the call \u2060would gather details on timelines, production plans and candidate suitability \u200bto help prioritize vaccine efforts\u00a0with partners\u00a0including the World Health \u200bOrganization and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).<\/p>\n
There is currently no approved vaccine for the Bundibugyo strain, which is behind the ongoing outbreaks \u200bin the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda.<\/p>\n
The outbreaks \u200bhave recorded more than 1,000 cases and more than 250 deaths so \u200cfar, \u2060underscoring the urgency of developing effective shots.<\/p>\n
Gavi said the initiative would support manufacturing readiness, regulatory pathways and early access to experimental doses for emergency use, with preference given to \u200bproposals involving production \u200bin Africa.<\/p>\n
Gavi \u2060has committed a total of $50 million through its First Response Fund to support the outbreak \u200bresponse.<\/p>\n
This includes up to $10 million to safeguard \u200broutine immunization, \u2060protect healthcare workers and aid response efforts, alongside $40 million earmarked to accelerate vaccine access.<\/p>\n
