Senegal’s ministry of economy, finance and planning on Tuesday issued a statement rejecting\u00a0comments\u00a0made two \u200bdays earlier by Trade Minister Serigne Gueye \u200cDiop which indicated that the government could be ready to restructure its debts if necessary.<\/p>\n
The statement, sent to international investors, \u200bsaid Diop’s remarks “merely reflect personal views and \u200bshould not be construed as representing the official \u2060position of the Government of Senegal.”<\/p>\n
The West African \u200bcountry’s finances have been in\u00a0crisis\u00a0since the 2024 discovery \u200bof billions of dollars in debt that were misreported by the previous government.<\/p>\n
The International Monetary Fund froze its lending programme \u200bover the discovery and the two sides have \u200bbeen discussing a new programme since. The Fund’s mission chief\u00a0visited\u00a0last \u200cweek.<\/p>\n
Apart \u2060from Diop’s comments, Senegalese authorities have publicly opposed a restructuring. They approached the IMF visit\u00a0still reluctant\u00a0to accept one, two sources told Reuters, citing domestic political \u200bopposition.<\/p>\n
Many investors \u200bview a \u2060restructuring as necessary to achieve debt sustainability. Then-Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko said in \u200bNovember that the IMF\u00a0had proposed\u00a0one, and \u200bcalled \u2060the proposal “a disgrace”.<\/p>\n
Some investors believed Sonko’s\u00a0dismissal\u00a0as prime minister last month would help clear the way for a \u2060debt \u200boverhaul.<\/p>\n
