Senegal’s minister of industry and trade, Serigne Gueye Diop, speaking on state \u200bTV late on Sunday, signalled that \u200cthe country could be willing to restructure its debts.<\/p>\n
The West African country’s finances have been in\u00a0crisis\u00a0\u200bsince the 2024 discovery of billions \u200bof dollars in debt that were \u2060misreported by the previous government.<\/p>\n
The International Monetary \u200bFund froze its lending programme over the \u200bdiscovery and the two sides have been discussing a new programme since.<\/p>\n
An IMF team visited Senegal last \u200bweek, and Diop said the government \u200bwas approaching negotiations with the Fund “without an ideology.”<\/p>\n
“If the \u200csolution \u2060lies in restructuring, the government is ready to do it,” Diop said.<\/p>\n
Senegalese authorities had until now publicly opposed a restructuring, which \u200bmany investors \u200bsee as \u2060necessary to make the debt sustainable.<\/p>\n
The former prime minister, who\u00a0had called \u200brestructuring a “disgrace”, was\u00a0sacked\u00a0last month.<\/p>\n
Senegal’s \u200bleaders \u2060approached last week’s IMF visit\u00a0still reluctant\u00a0to accept a restructuring, two sources told Reuters, citing \u2060domestic \u200bpolitical opposition.
