A Vietnamese man deported by the United States to South Sudan a \u200byear ago as part of the \u200cTrump administration’s hardline immigration agenda left for Vietnam on Friday, South Sudanese officials said.<\/p>\n
Tuan Thanh Phan \u200bwas among a group of\u00a0migrants with \u200bcriminal convictions transferred\u00a0by U.S. authorities to \u2060third countries last year under deportation \u200barrangements that drew international scrutiny.<\/p>\n
Speaking to journalists at \u200bJuba’s international airport before Phan boarded his flight, South Sudan foreign ministry spokesperson Agok Anyar Madut said \u200bthe repatriation exercise had been coordinated \u200bby the South Sudanese and Vietnamese governments.<\/p>\n
Phan said he \u200cwas \u2060looking forward to seeing his relatives after a long separation. He said he spent 25 years in prison before being deported \u200bfrom the United \u200bStates, \u2060without giving details.<\/p>\n
Vietnam’s foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a \u200brequest for comment.<\/p>\n
South Sudan previously repatriated \u200ba\u00a0Mexican \u2060national\u00a0also sent to the East African country under Trump’s deportations last year.
