South African President Cyril Ramaphosa filed an urgent court application on Friday to try to \u200bstop a parliamentary impeachment process from starting to \u200cprobe allegations related to his “Farmgate” scandal, court documents showed.<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa wants the high court to first make a decision on a separate \u200bapplication he made to set aside an independent \u200bpanel’s misconduct findings over the scandal, in which \u2060bundles of cash were stolen from a sofa \u200bon his farm in 2020.<\/p>\n
The president said $580,000 in cash was \u200bstolen and it was proceeds from the sale of buffaloes, but the episode raised questions about why the money was hidden \u200bin furniture and whether he had declared it. Ramaphosa \u200bhas denied wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
South Africa’s constitutional court\u00a0revived impeachment proceedings\u00a0against Ramaphosa last \u200cmonth, \u2060finding that a parliamentary vote to stop the process in 2022 was invalid.<\/p>\n
The high court is due to hear his case against the misconduct findings from September \u200b2 to 4.<\/p>\n
Ramaphosa, \u200b73, has \u2060been head of state since 2018 and his second presidential term is due to \u200bend in 2029.<\/p>\n
Farmgate has been a major \u200bembarrassment \u2060for him as he came to power on a pledge to fight corruption and clean up the image of \u2060his \u200bAfrican National Congress (ANC) party.<\/p>\n
