The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on commanders of armed groups it accused of driving the \u200bconflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, where fighting has continued \u200cdespite mediation efforts by Washington.<\/p>\n
Clashes have continued in eastern Congo, where M23 rebels, which the U.N. says are backed by Rwanda, and the Democratic Forces for the \u200bLiberation of Rwanda (FDLR), a Hutu militia rooted in the 1994 \u200bgenocide, are fighting on opposite sides. Rwanda denies backing M23.<\/p>\n
The \u2060U.S. Treasury Department in a statement said it imposed sanctions on M23 \u200bcommander and chief of intelligence John Imani Nzenze, as well as Gustave \u200bKubwayo, an FDLR commander and leader of an intelligence and special operations unit.<\/p>\n
\u201cPresident Trump has been clear that there is an urgent need to resolve the horrific \u200bconflict in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the United States \u200bis committed to peace and prosperity in the region,\u201d Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said \u200cin \u2060the statement.<\/p>\n
\u201cPersistent violence by armed groups is exacerbating an already dire humanitarian crisis and presents a threat to U.S. interests in the region. Today\u2019s sanctions support a peaceful resolution and end to the bloodshed.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nzenze, a spokesperson for \u200bthe Rwandan government \u200band the Democratic \u2060Republic of Congo did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Rwanda and Congo signed a in Washington \u200bin December as part of U.S. President\u00a0Donald Trump’s push \u200bto \u2060broker peace and attract billions of dollars in Western investment.<\/p>\n
