French President Emmanuel Macron and his Rwandan counterpart Paul Kagame on Tuesday inaugurated a memorial \u200bin Paris to honour the victims of \u200cthe 1994 genocide against the Tutsis in Rwanda.<\/p>\n
Macron said the memorial placed the genocide of the Tutsis “at the heart \u200bof our capital and our history”, and that \u200bit was “the culmination of a long and painstaking \u2060quest for the truth”.<\/p>\n
In May 2021, during a \u200bvisit to Rwanda, Macron recognised his country\u2019s responsibility \u200bin the Rwandan genocide and said he hoped for forgiveness, seeking to reset relations after years of Rwandan accusations that France \u200bwas complicit in the 1994 slaughter of an \u200bestimated 800,000 people \u2014 mostly ethnic Tutsis. However, he stopped short \u200cof \u2060issuing a formal apology.<\/p>\n
This was after a commission established by Macron concluded in March 2021 that France had been blinded by its colonial attitude to events \u200bleading up to \u200bthe genocide \u2060and bore a “serious and overwhelming” responsibility for failing to foresee the slaughter.<\/p>\n
The memorial \u200bon the banks of the Seine \u200briver in \u2060the heart of Paris is named “L’Archive”. It was designed by Portuguese artist Grada Kilomba. It consists of \u2060two \u200bblack steles and bears an engraved \u200btribute to the hundreds of thousands of men, women, and children \u200bmassacred between April and July 1994.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
