Nigeria’s anti-graft agency has arrested former power minister Saleh Mamman, \u200bdays after a\u00a0court sentenced him in absentia\u00a0\u200cto 75 years in prison for laundering 33.8 billion naira ($24.65 million), its chairman said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Economic and \u200bFinancial Crimes Commission chief Ola Olukoyede said \u200bthat Mamman, who had been in hiding \u2060since his May 7 conviction, was arrested in \u200bthe northern city of Kaduna in the middle \u200bof the night and is now in custody.<\/p>\n
The arrest marks a rare follow-through in Nigeria’s fight against high-level \u200bcorruption, where convictions of senior officials are \u200buncommon and enforcement is often slow.<\/p>\n
Olukoyede said Mamman had been “protected” \u200cwhile \u2060on the run and that two other suspects were arrested for harbouring him. Authorities are also investigating the property where he was found.<\/p>\n
On \u200bMay 7, a \u200bNigerian \u2060court convicted Mamman on all 12 counts of corruption and money laundering \u200binvolving funds tied to two government-backed \u200bhydroelectric projects. \u2060He was sentenced to seven years in prison on each of 10 counts, and to three \u2060and \u200btwo years on two \u200bcounts, to run consecutively.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
