A further 1.58 \u2060billion rand is due on June 5.<\/p>\n<p>The \u200bCity of Johannesburg did not immediately respond to a \u200bReuters request for comment.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom has issued a notice of its intention to &#8220;reduce, interrupt and\/or terminate the supply of electricity \u200bto certain bulk supply points against the \u200bCity of Johannesburg and City Power&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The utility said it had \u200cworked \u2060with the Johannesburg metropolitan municipality for more than two years over the unpaid debts, but the city had repeatedly defaulted.<\/p>\n<p>Johannesburg&#8217;s financial woes have been \u200bin the spotlight \u200brecently after \u2060the country&#8217;s National Treasury raised\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.treasury.gov.za\/comm_media\/press\/2026\/2026050801%20Media%20statement%20-%20Minister%20of%20Finance%20meeting%20with%20Johannesburg%20Mayor.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;serious concerns&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0over the state of its finances.<\/p>\n<p>Eskom \u200bhas also had longstanding financial troubles, \u200bbut \u2060it has started to emerge from them thanks to government bailouts and a sudden turnaround in the \u2060performance \u200bof its coal-fired power station \u200bfleet.
