Nigerian billionaire Aliko Dangote is looking at Kenya as the \u200bsite of a 650,000-barrel-a-day oil refinery that \u200che intends to build in East Africa, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing an interview with him.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m leaning more \u200btowards Mombasa because Mombasa has a much \u200blarger, deeper port,\u201d Dangote said in the interview.<\/p>\n
The report \u2060comes after Kenyan President William Ruto said last \u200bmonth that East African countries were\u00a0discussing plans\u00a0for a \u200bjoint oil refinery at the Tanzanian port of Tanga that is modeled on Nigeria’s Dangote operation.<\/p>\n
However, Dangote in the interview compared Kenya\u2019s Mombasa to \u200bTanzania’s Tanga port, and said, \u201cKenyans consume more. It\u2019s \u200ba bigger economy.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe ball is in the hands of President Ruto,\u201d \u200che \u2060said. \u201cWhatever President Ruto says is what I\u2019ll do,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Dangote estimated it would cost $15 billion to $17 billion to build the refinery, the FT report said.<\/p>\n
East Africa \u200bcurrently imports \u200ball of \u2060its refined petroleum products, mainly from the Middle East, leaving the region vulnerable \u200bto the supply disruptions and price spikes that have been \u200bseen \u2060during the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran.<\/p>\n
