{"id":20798,"date":"2026-05-06T15:02:53","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T15:02:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20798"},"modified":"2026-05-06T15:02:53","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T15:02:53","slug":"burkina-faso-junta-dissolves-over-200-associations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20798\/burkina-faso-junta-dissolves-over-200-associations\/","title":{"rendered":"Burkina Faso junta dissolves over 200 associations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso&#8217;s military rulers ordered on Tuesday the dissolution of around 200 associations,\u00a0the latest clampdown on civic groups\u00a0in the West African country.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the Sahel country suspended 205 associations, all based in Burkina, involved in health, education, women&#8217;s rights, farming, the environment, culture and sport.<\/p>\n<p>Since taking power in the Sahel country in a coup in 2022, the ruling junta has cracked down on hundreds of NGOs, unions and the freedom of assembly, along with opposition to its military rule.<\/p>\n<p>In July 2025, junta leader Ibrahim Traore signed a law restricting the workings of rights groups and syndicates.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;During the suspension period, only actions designed to ensure the associations are respecting the law are allowed,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0the government said in a decree.<\/p>\n<p>International NGOs and charities that receive foreign donations are regularly accused by the junta of spying or collusion with jihadists fighting the army.<\/p>\n<p>In April, Burkina Faso&#8217;s military authorities already\u00a0banned several hundred associations \u2013 many of which were involved in human rights work \u2013 from operating across the country.<\/p>\n<p>That same month, Human Rights Watch said the law enabled the junta to intensify\u00a0a generalised crackdown\u00a0on civil society.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Burkina Faso&#8217;s military rulers ordered on Tuesday the dissolution of around 200 associations,\u00a0the latest clampdown on civic groups\u00a0in the West African country.
