{"id":20792,"date":"2026-05-06T14:51:25","date_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:51:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20792"},"modified":"2026-05-06T14:51:25","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T14:51:25","slug":"china-condemns-eswatini-for-being-kept-and-fed-by-taiwan-in-travel-row","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20792\/china-condemns-eswatini-for-being-kept-and-fed-by-taiwan-in-travel-row\/","title":{"rendered":"China condemns Eswatini for being &#8216;kept and fed&#8217; by Taiwan in travel row"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>China said on Wednesday Eswatini&#8217;s leaders were being &#8220;kept and fed&#8221; \u200cby Taiwan, using unusually strong language to condemn the small southern African kingdom for hosting President Lai Ching-te.<\/p>\n<p>China and Taiwan have long traded accusations of &#8220;dollar diplomacy&#8221; to win support from developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing&#8217;s latest criticism came after Lai returned home on Tuesday from a\u00a0surprise \u200btrip\u00a0to the former Swaziland, one of just\u00a012 countries\u00a0with formal diplomatic ties to the democratically \u200bgoverned island claimed by China.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing views Lai as a &#8220;separatist&#8221; and has demanded that other countries \u2060refuse to deal with his government or host him.<\/p>\n<p>Lai&#8217;s government said China had forced three Indian Ocean \u200bnations &#8211; the Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar &#8211; to\u00a0deny overflight permission\u00a0for his aircraft when he first planned to go last \u200bmonth for celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the accession to the throne of King Mswati III.<\/p>\n<p>Lai had &#8220;stowed away&#8221; to get to Eswatini, said Lin Jian, a spokesperson of China&#8217;s foreign ministry.<\/p>\n<p>This showed that &#8220;separatist&#8221; activities were rejected by the international community and were \u200ba &#8220;scandal and a farce&#8221;, he told reporters in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Some politicians in Eswatini, kept and fed by Taiwan, have \u200bprovided space for Taiwan independence forces \u2014 this runs counter to the tide of history, and China strongly condemns it,&#8221; Lin added, \u200cusing a \u2060derogatory expression used to refer to a person being kept in servitude to another or used as a lackey.<\/p>\n<p>In response, Eswatini&#8217;s acting government spokeswoman Thabile Mdluli told Reuters the remarks were &#8220;deeply unfortunate and fall short of the standards expected in respectful international discourse. It is especially concerning when statements of this nature come from a country \u200bthat positions itself as a \u200bresponsible global actor.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Eswatini must \u2060not be bullied and our sovereign decisions ought to be respected by all,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan&#8217;s government has been in celebratory mood after Lai made it to Eswatini and \u200bthen returned via a circuitous route skirting airspace controlled by Mauritius and Madagascar.<\/p>\n<p>Instead \u200bof travelling on \u2060a plane chartered from Taiwan&#8217;s China Airlines, as originally planned in line with usual practice, Lai flew on the king&#8217;s private A340 aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>The trip further deepened the friendship between Taiwan and Eswatini, Lai, who rejects Beijing&#8217;s sovereignty claims, told \u2060a regular \u200bweekly meeting of his Democratic Progressive Party on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Despite China&#8217;s &#8220;blockade and \u200bsuppression&#8221;, Taiwan &#8220;will surely advance steadily onto the international stage&#8221; as long as it remains unyielding and united and works hand in hand with \u200blike-minded partners, Lai added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>China said on Wednesday Eswatini&#8217;s leaders were being &#8220;kept and fed&#8221; \u200cby Taiwan, using unusually strong language to condemn the small southern African kingdom for hosting President Lai Ching-te.
