{"id":20789,"date":"2026-05-05T15:13:08","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T15:13:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20789"},"modified":"2026-05-05T15:13:08","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T15:13:08","slug":"thousands-march-in-dr-congo-capital-in-support-of-us-sanctions-against-kabila","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20789\/thousands-march-in-dr-congo-capital-in-support-of-us-sanctions-against-kabila\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands march in DR Congo capital in support of US sanctions against Kabila"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of pro-government supporters took to the streets of the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, on Monday in support of\u00a0United States sanctions against Joseph Kabila.<\/p>\n<p>Washington blacklisted the former president last week, accusing him of supporting the Rwanda-backed M23 rebels and its political-military arm, the Congo River Alliance (AFC), involved in the conflict in the east of the country.<\/p>\n<p>The Treasury Department claimed that, among other things, Kabila has provided them with financial and technological support with the intent to destabilise the Kinshasa government.<\/p>\n<p>Violent conflict in the region has resulted in the deaths of thousands of civilians and a mass displacement crisis.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at Monday\u2019s march, Julien, a member of one of the parties in the DRC\u2019s ruling coalition, commended Washington\u2019s decision to impose sanctions on Kabila.<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Kabila has committed many massacres, and he won\u2019t let Fatshi [President Tshisekedi\u2019s nickname] get on with his work in peace,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cNow arrest Kabila so that he leaves us in peace, we want nothing more to do with him,\u201d<\/em>\u00a0said Julien.<\/p>\n<p>Ouragan Mwanza, an activist with the main UDPS party, described the sanctions as a\u00a0<em>\u201csignificant step\u201d<\/em>\u00a0against\u00a0<em>\u201cthe murderers and criminals.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;[They] have destroyed this country, reduced it to ruins, and shattered all its values by dismantling state-owned companies for the benefit of their own private, family-run businesses,&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0he said.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a Congolese military court sentenced Kabila to death in absentia for treason for\u00a0<em>&#8220;complicity&#8221;<\/em>\u00a0with the M23\/AFC alliance.<\/p>\n<p>The government in Kinshasa on Friday said it welcomed the sanctions as\u00a0<em>&#8220;an important step in the fight against impunity.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Kabila, meanwhile, has described them as\u00a0<em>\u201cprofoundly unjustified,<\/em>\u00a0<em>politically motivated<\/em><em>, and based on unsubstantiated accusations.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Fighting in the mineral-rich eastern DRC continues, despite a framework peace deal signed between the government and the M23 late last year.<\/p>\n<p>Washington has already imposed sanctions on the DRC&#8217;s neighbour, Rwanda, in an attempt to enforce the unsuccessful agreement.<\/p>\n<p>The peace accord, which US President Donald Trump announced with great fanfare, includes a provision for US industries to gain privileged access to the region&#8217;s mineral riches.<\/p>\n<p>The Rwanda-backed rebels have seized large swathes of the eastern DRC in a major push in recent years, capturing the strategic town of Goma in January 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Thousands of civilians have been killed and hundreds of thousands displaced in the intensified fighting, which has created a major humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thousands of pro-government supporters took to the streets of the Congolese capital, Kinshasa, on Monday in support of\u00a0United States sanctions against Joseph Kabila.
