Amnesty International called on Nigeria to \u200binvestigate reports that at least 150 people, \u200cmost of them children, had died in an army-run camp in north-central Kwara State \u2013 though the military \u200bsaid the reports were baseless.<\/p>\n
The victims were \u200breported to be among about 1,500 members of \u2060the Fulani community who were moved to the \u200bcamp in Yikpata after facing escalating attacks by \u200barmed groups, Amnesty said on Thursday.<\/p>\n
“Instead of finding safety, they face overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, restrictions on their \u200bmovements, acute malnutrition and disease,” Amnesty said \u200bin a statement.<\/p>\n
The military dismissed the report of deaths. “There is \u200cno \u2060verifiable evidence to support such an allegation,” Major General Michael Onoja, Director of Defence Media Operations, told Reuters.<\/p>\n
“I doubt its veracity. Nothing like \u200bthis has happened,” \u200bhe \u2060added.<\/p>\n
Amnesty said its researchers who visited the camp in April spoke to \u200bsurvivors who said starvation and disease \u200bwere widespread, \u2060with multiple bodies buried in single graves.<\/p>\n
