{"id":20599,"date":"2026-04-23T11:28:22","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T11:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20599"},"modified":"2026-04-23T11:28:22","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T11:28:22","slug":"us-criticizes-chinas-pressure-on-african-countries-to-block-taiwan-presidents-trip","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20599\/us-criticizes-chinas-pressure-on-african-countries-to-block-taiwan-presidents-trip\/","title":{"rendered":"US criticizes China&#8217;s pressure on African countries to block Taiwan president&#8217;s trip"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States is concerned that several African countries revoked overflight clearances for \u200cTaiwan&#8217;s president at China&#8217;s behest, the State Department said on Wednesday, calling the incident an abuse of the international civil aviation system.<\/p>\n<p>Taiwan this week said the Seychelles, Mauritius and Madagascar unilaterally\u00a0revoked flight permits for its presidential aircraft to cross airspace they manage on a planned trip to Eswatini, one \u200bof Taiwan&#8217;s allies.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first instance of a Taiwan president having to cancel an entire foreign trip due \u200bto denial of airspace access, representing a new Chinese strategy as it steps up efforts to stifle \u2060the island&#8217;s efforts to engage internationally.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These countries are acting at the behest of China by interfering in the safety and dignity \u200bof routine travel by Taiwan officials,&#8221; a State Department spokesperson told Reuters, without naming the African island nations.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. official said \u200bthose countries&#8217; management responsibility of certain international airspace beyond their sovereign airspace was &#8220;solely to ensure aviation safety, not to serve as a political tool for Beijing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is yet another case of Beijing waging its intimidation campaign against Taiwan and Taiwan&#8217;s supporters around the world, abusing the international civil aviation system, \u200band threatening international peace and prosperity,&#8221; the official said.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing should cease military, diplomatic, and economic pressure against Taiwan, the official added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>EU, \u200bBRITAIN EXPRESS CONCERN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A senior Taiwan security official had told Reuters that China applied pressure on the Seychelles, Madagascar and Mauritius, threatening economic sanctions including \u200crevoking \u2060debt relief.<\/p>\n<p>China&#8217;s Taiwan Affairs Office denied the claim, but\u00a0expressed appreciation\u00a0for the position and &#8220;practice&#8221; of the three countries in adhering to the one-China principle.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union and Britain&#8217;s de facto ambassador to Taiwan, Ruth Bradley-Jones, also expressed concern.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While states exercise sovereignty over their airspace, such decisions should be taken in a transparent and predictable manner,&#8221; an EU spokesperson said. &#8220;Such decisions should not be taken to \u200bachieve political objectives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Airspace management decisions about \u200bshould put safety and stability \u2060first, and &#8220;should not be made for political ends,&#8221; Bradley-Jones said in a separate statement.<\/p>\n<p>China views democratically governed Taiwan as its territory despite Taipei&#8217;s rejection of the claim, and frequently calls the issue \u200ba &#8220;red line&#8221; in its diplomatic relations with other countries.<\/p>\n<p>The small southern African nation of Eswatini \u200bis one of \u2060only 12 countries to retain formal ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan. Lai was due to leave on Wednesday for the 40th anniversary of King Mswati III&#8217;s accession.<\/p>\n<p>The last time a Taiwanese president visited Eswatini, formerly known as Swaziland and home to around 1.3 million people, was in \u20602023, when \u200bTsai Ing-wen made the journey.<\/p>\n<p>Numerous U.S. lawmakers also condemned China for the \u200bmove and expressed support for Taiwan.
