Ugandan and Congolese soldiers rescued at least 200 civilians \u200bin a raid on a terrorist camp \u200cin the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo last week, Uganda’s military said on Monday.<\/p>\n
The captives had been held by the Allied \u200bDemocratic Forces, a Ugandan group operating in eastern \u200bCongo that pledged allegiance to Islamic State a \u2060decade ago.<\/p>\n
The ADF has killed thousands of civilians \u200bin eastern Congo since stepping up attacks in 2014, \u200baccording to U.N. figures. Congo’s army has said the group was responsible for kidnapping large numbers of civilians and forcing young \u200bfemale captives into marriages with fighters.<\/p>\n
The Uganda \u200bPeoples’ Defence Forces said in a statement that those freed from \u200cthe \u2060camp along the River Epulu included a 14-year-old girl. UPDF spokesperson Chris Magezi told Reuters the raid was conducted last week.<\/p>\n
“Several appeared frail, suffering from untreated illnesses \u200bsuch as malaria, \u200brespiratory infections, \u2060and physical exhaustion,” the UPDF statement said.<\/p>\n
Uganda\u00a0sent troops to Congo\u00a0in 2021 \u200bto help the Kinshasa government fight the \u200bADF.<\/p>\n
