South Africa’s \u200bnewly-elected Democratic Alliance (DA) party leader, Geordin \u200cHill-Lewis, said he was committed to making the governing coalition work and was due to meet President Cyril \u200bRamaphosa on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Cape Town Mayor Hill-Lewis was\u00a0elected head\u00a0\u200bof the pro-business DA at a party \u2060conference over the weekend.<\/p>\n
The DA is the \u200bsecond-biggest party in the “Government of National Unity” coalition \u200bformed in 2024, when Ramaphosa’s African National Congress lost its parliamentary majority in an election.<\/p>\n
Hill-Lewis told reporters on Monday that \u200bhe thought the coalition government was “the best \u200bchance that South Africa’s had in probably 25 years … \u200cto \u2060get our country on a better path of higher growth and more jobs and proper reform”.<\/p>\n
He described his appointment with Ramaphosa on Tuesday \u200bas a “get-to-know-you \u200bmeeting”.<\/p>\n
“I’m not \u2060going there to try and throw any weight around,” Hill-Lewis said, \u200badding that he wanted to remain as \u200bCape \u2060Town mayor rather than seeking a post in national government.<\/p>\n
Hill-Lewis has been mayor of South \u2060Africa’s \u200bsecond-biggest city and tourism hub\u00a0since \u200bthe last municipal elections in 2021.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
