Terrorists riding motorbikes stormed an army base near Nigeria’s northeastern border \u200bwith Chad, killing the commander and six \u200cother soldiers late on Sunday, two military sources said.<\/p>\n
The assault was by members of Boko Haram and its splinter \u200bgroup Islamic State West Africa Province, the sources \u200btold Reuters, and came days after a string \u2060of\u00a0coordinated attacks\u00a0on military positions in other parts \u200bof Borno State.<\/p>\n
Insurgents have\u00a0ramped up attacks\u00a0on overstretched \u200bbases and looted weapons across the region, piling pressure on the government and President Bola Tinubu who has vowed to end \u200byears of violence.<\/p>\n
Those killed late on Sunday included \u200bthe base commander who was weeks from retirement and six \u200cother \u2060soldiers whose vehicle struck an improvised mine while heading to reinforce troops during the attack, the sources said.<\/p>\n
At least 12 militants were killed in a gunfight \u200bduring the attack \u200bon the \u2060242 Battalion barracks in Monguno, the sources added, requesting anonymity because they were \u200bnot authorised to speak to the \u200bmedia.<\/p>\n
