Senegal’s economic growth is forecast to slow to 2.5% this year from 6.7% \u200bin 2025 due to declining hydrocarbon production, \u200cthe country’s economy ministry said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The West African nation has faced economic challenges since the discovery of $13 billion \u200bin hidden debt attributed to the previous administration.<\/p>\n
It \u200bhas relied heavily on the regional debt market \u2060to meet its funding needs since last year \u200bdue to the misreporting case that has closed \u200boff funding from the International Monetary Fund and other financiers.<\/p>\n
An economic outlook document released by the economy ministry said that while \u200bthe public debt-to-GDP ratio is expected to decline \u200bfrom 121.3% in 2024 to 116.2% in 2025, the overall \u200crisk \u2060of sovereign debt stress remains high in the medium term.<\/p>\n
It said the budget deficit declined to 6.2% of gross domestic product in 2025 from 13.7% the \u200bprevious year, driven \u200bmainly by \u2060deep cuts in public spending.<\/p>\n
The deficit is expected to narrow further to about \u200b5.4% of GDP in 2026, as \u200bnew tax \u2060measures under a government recovery programme and rising hydrocarbon revenues help offset a planned rebound in public \u2060investment.<\/p>\n
