Zimbabwe will introduce \u200clithium concentrate export quotas and require commitments for more local processing as part of conditions to allow the resumption of mineral exports, the mines ministry has told producers.<\/p>\n
Africa’s \u200btop lithium producer\u00a0suspended exports of lithium concentrates and other unprocessed minerals \u200bon February 26 after the government alleged malpractices and leakages.<\/p>\n
In \u2060a letter to the country’s mining chamber seen by Reuters on Wednesday, \u200bZimbabwe’s mines ministry set out conditions including the mandatory publication of mines’ annual \u200bfinancial statements as well as labour, safety and environmental standards.<\/p>\n
“Approved lithium concentrate export quotas will be communicated to each producer,” the letter, dated April 2, added.<\/p>\n
The government also \u200bwants “written commitments on dedicated timelines to set up lithium sulphate plants” before \u200bJanuary 1, 2027, it added.<\/p>\n
A 10% export tax will, meanwhile, continue to be levied on \u200clithium \u2060concentrate exports until a\u00a0January 2027 ban\u00a0on concentrate shipments comes into force.<\/p>\n
The Chamber of Mines Zimbabwe did not immediately respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Chinese mining firms including Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, Sinomine, Chengxin Lithium Group, Yahua, and the \u200bTsingshan Holding Group \u200bdominate Zimbabwe’s lithium \u2060mining sector, consolidating China’s dominance of the global battery metal supply chain.<\/p>\n
In 2025, Zimbabwe exported 1.128 million metric tons \u200bof lithium-bearing spodumene concentrate to China, accounting for about \u200b15% of \u2060its lithium concentrate imports for the year.<\/p>\n
Huayou recently built a\u00a0$400 million plant\u00a0to further process lithium concentrates into lithium sulphate, an intermediate product that can be \u2060refined \u200binto battery-grade materials such as lithium hydroxide \u200bor lithium carbonate.<\/p>\n
Sinomine and Yahua have also announced plans to build lithium sulphate plants at their \u200bZimbabwe mines.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
