South Sudan President Salva Kiir has sacked the East African nation’s speaker and \u200bdeputy speaker of parliament, according to \u200ca decree read out in the parliament on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Tulio Odongi Ayahu, chief whip of Kiir’s ruling Sudan People’s \u200bLiberation Movement (SPLM), announced the decree removing \u200bSpeaker Jemma Nunu Kumba and her deputy, \u2060Permena Awerial Aluong, from their posts in \u200bthe Transitional National Legislative Assembly.<\/p>\n
The move follows a \u200bpetition last week by SPLM caucus members accusing Kumba of corruption linked to the alleged mismanagement of parliamentary \u200bfunds and calling for her removal.<\/p>\n
Kumba, who \u200bmade history in 2021 as the first woman to serve \u200cas \u2060speaker of South Sudan’s parliament, has not responded to the allegations.<\/p>\n
Kiir appointed Joseph Ngere Paciko and Abuk Paiti Ayiik as the new speaker \u200band deputy \u200bspeaker, respectively.<\/p>\n
The \u2060sackings come after Kiir, in late February, abruptly fired the then finance minister Bak Barnaba Chol, who had \u200bbeen \u2060in office for just three months, without giving a reason.<\/p>\n
