Former Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille has been \u200bappointed U.N. resident coordinator in Kenya, the U.N. said \u200con Wednesday, adding he would take up his post that same day.<\/p>\n
Conille’s second term as prime minister, for six months in 2024, \u200bcoincided with the first deployments of Kenyan troops \u200bas part of a U.N.-backed force mandated to help \u2060Haitian police restore security amid\u00a0violent conflict with armed gangs.<\/p>\n
Kenya \u200bled the initial U.N.-backed force, which has since been restructured \u200binto the Gang Suppression Force. Authorities in neighbouring Dominican Republic said Kenyan forces are expected to withdraw gradually as they are replaced \u200bby other nations.<\/p>\n
Less than 1,000 troops \u2013 mostly Kenyans \u2013 were \u200bin Haiti as of early this year. The force aims for some \u200c5,500 \u2060by summer, but few nations have committed troops.<\/p>\n
The gangs have, meanwhile, formed broad alliances that have cemented control over most of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and expanded their reach over \u200bswathes of rural \u200band central \u2060Haiti.<\/p>\n
Conille was succeeded by Alix Didier Fils-Aime, who gained full executive power from the \u200bcountry’s then-ruling council in February.<\/p>\n
Conille also served as \u200bprime \u2060minister for four months in the early 2010s. In both cases, he ended his term amid political infighting among the \u2060country’s \u200bleaders.<\/p>\n
