Chad has begun the emergency relocation of refugees from its border with Sudan as the army prepares to \u200bdeploy to the area in response to cross-border attacks, an \u200cofficial from the country’s refugee agency told Reuters on Monday.<\/p>\n
President Mahamat Idriss Deby last week ordered the army to prepare to retaliate after a cross-border\u00a0drone attack \u200bfrom Sudan killed 17 people in Chad including mourners attending \u200ba funeral service.<\/p>\n
A separate government statement last week said Chad \u2060had strengthened its security presence at the border and could \u200bpotentially carry out operations on Sudanese territory.<\/p>\n
Initial refugee relocation operations will involve \u200baround 2,300 people, more than half of them women and children, said Saleh Tebir Souleymane, the representative in the border town of Tine for Chad’s National Commission \u200bfor the Reception and Reintegration of Refugees and Returnees.<\/p>\n
They began moving \u200bpeople further into Chad, away from the frontier, on Saturday, in the province \u200cof \u2060Ennedi Est, and were set to expand on Monday to all border towns that have been used as transit sites for refugees, Souleymane said.<\/p>\n
“We have received instructions from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs to act \u200bquickly because the \u200bborder will be \u2060secured in the coming days by the army, which is already deploying there,” Souleymane said.<\/p>\n
Chad closed its \u200beastern border with Sudan\u00a0last month\u00a0after clashes linked to \u200bthe \u2060war killed five Chadian soldiers.<\/p>\n
But refugees continue to arrive “due to the intense fighting on the Sudanese side”, he said.<\/p>\n
The conflict in Sudan between the \u2060Sudanese \u200barmy and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, \u200bwhich began in April 2023, has periodically spilled into Chadian territory, causing casualties and property \u200bdamage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
