{"id":20223,"date":"2026-03-23T14:58:47","date_gmt":"2026-03-23T14:58:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20223"},"modified":"2026-03-23T14:58:47","modified_gmt":"2026-03-23T14:58:47","slug":"middle-east-shock-gives-dangote-refinery-leverage-as-cheap-imports-dry-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20223\/middle-east-shock-gives-dangote-refinery-leverage-as-cheap-imports-dry-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Middle East shock gives Dangote Refinery leverage as cheap imports dry up"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stepped up \u200cgasoline exports across Africa as disruptions to energy flows due to the America-Israel war on Iran\u00a0squeeze traditional fuel supply routes, curbing the cheap imports that long dominated West African markets.<\/p>\n<p>Data from tanker-tracking firm Kpler show Nigeria&#8217;s exports \u200bof clean petroleum products &#8211; which include gasoline, diesel, kerosene and jet fuel &#8211; have \u200brisen to about 214,000 barrels per day so far in March from \u2060an average 100,000 bpd in February.<\/p>\n<p>Shipments to other African countries have climbed to about 90,000 \u200bbpd from 38,000 bpd previously.<\/p>\n<p>The 650,000 barrel-per-day Dangote refinery has sold 12 cargoes of premium \u200bmotor spirit, totalling 456,000 metric tons, on a free-on-board basis to international traders, with shipments delivered to Cote d&#8217;Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana and Togo, sources familiar with the deals said.<\/p>\n<p>The sales mark Dangote&#8217;s first exports \u200bof gasoline since the plant reached full capacity in February.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OPPORTUNITIES FOR REFINERS WITH SHORTER \u200bSUPPLY CHAINS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The escalating Middle East conflict has pushed up global crude prices, lifting feedstock costs for refiners worldwide. \u200cAt \u2060the same time, shipping disruptions and lower fuel availability from Europe and the Gulf have cut flows of low-cost refined products into West Africa.<\/p>\n<p>That has created opportunities for suppliers with shorter supply chains.<\/p>\n<p>Dangote&#8217;s owner Aliko Dangote has been\u00a0sparring\u00a0with Nigerian regulators over continued petrol imports, \u200bwhich he contends undermine \u200bhis refinery.<\/p>\n<p>Nigeria\u00a0halted\u00a0imports last \u2060month. Since then, domestic pump prices have risen more than 50% as the Iran conflict roiled energy markets.<\/p>\n<p>The country consumes an estimated \u200b50 million to 60 million litres of gasoline a day \u2014 nearly \u200bone-fifth of Africa\u2019s \u2060total demand \u2014 making fuel availability and pricing acutely sensitive to swings in global markets.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, West Africa has depended heavily on imported fuel cargoes from Europe and the Middle East, often \u2060of lower \u200bquality, leaving the region exposed to logistical delays and \u200bexternal supply shocks.<\/p>\n<p>As the Dangote Refinery seeks to end all imports, the Middle East crisis is pushing more \u200blocal fuel traders to seek supply from the refinery.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Nigeria&#8217;s Dangote Petroleum Refinery has stepped up \u200cgasoline exports across Africa as disruptions to energy flows due to the America-Israel war on Iran\u00a0squeeze traditional fuel supply routes, curbing the cheap imports that long dominated West African markets.
