Somalia’s South West state said on Tuesday it was suspending all cooperation and relations with the government in \u200bMogadishu, the latest sign of strain in the Horn \u200cof Africa country’s fragile federal system.<\/p>\n
At a press conference, South West officials accused the federal government of arming militias and trying to unseat the \u200bstate’s president, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen.<\/p>\n
Somalia’s defence and information \u200bministers did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment.<\/p>\n
Disputes \u2060over\u00a0constitutional changes, elections and the balance of power between Mogadishu \u200band regional administrations repeatedly open up political faultlines in Somalia.<\/p>\n
The South \u200bWest administration says relations with Mogadishu worsened after the federal government pushed through\u00a0constitutional amendments\u00a0opposed by some state leaders.<\/p>\n
Travel agencies told Reuters on Tuesday \u200bthat commercial flights between Mogadishu and Baidoa, the administrative capital \u200bof South West state, had been halted. Humanitarian flights, including for United Nations \u200coperations, \u2060were continuing.<\/p>\n
Baidoa, which lies about 245 km (150 miles) northwest of Mogadishu, is a politically and militarily sensitive city because it hosts federal troops, regional security forces and international humanitarian operations in \u200ba zone affected \u200bby drought, conflict \u2060and displacement.<\/p>\n
The Mogadishu government’s relations with other states have also been fraught.\u00a0Somaliland\u00a0declared independence in 1991 \u200band has long been outside Mogadishu’s control.<\/p>\n
The administration \u200bof \u2060semi-autonomous\u00a0Puntland\u00a0said in March 2024 it would no longer recognise the federal government until disputed constitutional amendments were approved in a nationwide \u2060referendum.<\/p>\n
