“People have been very receptive,” Sindy Matse, \u2060programme manager for the Eswatini National AIDS Programme, \u200btold Reuters, adding that stock was nearly exhausted \u200bby the initial uptake.<\/p>\n
U.S.-based Gilead Sciences’ drug lenacapavir is a subcutaneous injection given twice a year. It aims to overcome problems \u200bassociated with daily oral pre-exposure prophylaxis pills (PrEP), such \u200bas forgetting to take them and failing to acquire enough \u200cpills \u2060to keep taking them consistently.<\/p>\n
Matse said the programme aimed to have it available in all 206 health facilities that had been offering PrEP.<\/p>\n
Eswatini is a small \u200bSouth African kingdom \u200bformerly known \u2060as Swaziland.<\/p>\n
Around a quarter of Swazis between the ages of 15 and 49 \u200bcarry the virus, according to the \u200blatest data, \u2060from 2023, from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
