Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine said he has temporarily left the country after two months in hiding in the wake of \u200ba presidential election in January that kept long\u2011time leader\u00a0Yoweri \u200cMuseveni\u00a0in office.<\/p>\n
Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, disputed the outcome of that contest, alleging fraud, and had been in hiding since fleeing his \u200bhome in Uganda’s capital Kampala.<\/p>\n
In a five-minute video message \u200bposted on X on Saturday, Wine said he had left \u2060the country for “critical engagements outside Uganda”, without specifying where he \u200bwas or what the engagements were.<\/p>\n
“At the right time I will \u200bcome back and continue with the cause,” he said.<\/p>\n
The\u00a0pop star\u2011turned\u2011politician\u00a0has said his campaign was constrained by security forces blocking his rallies and arresting his \u200bsupporters.<\/p>\n
In the message published on Saturday, Wine said security forces had \u200berected roadblocks and conducted raids to try to find him.<\/p>\n
Uganda\u2019s government and military \u200cdid \u2060not immediately respond to requests for comment on Wine’s message.<\/p>\n
Uganda’s military chief,\u00a0Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also Museveni’s son, has stated in social media posts that the military is looking for Wine, though \u200bit is unclear \u200bwhy or what \u2060crime he might be charged with.<\/p>\n
Wine said on Saturday that Museveni had “usurped the will of the \u200bpeople”. He said that while outside of Uganda he \u200bwould \u2060engage international allies and later return to continue what he called a push for freedom and democracy.<\/p>\n
Museveni, 81, has ruled Uganda\u00a0since 1986\u00a0and \u2060has \u200brepeatedly won elections that opposition groups and \u200brights organisations say were marred by intimidation and violence, accusations the government denies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
