{"id":20124,"date":"2026-03-10T13:17:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T13:17:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/?p=20124"},"modified":"2026-03-10T13:17:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T13:17:08","slug":"south-africas-economy-grows-1-1-in-2025-below-government-estimates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qiraatafrican.com\/en\/20124\/south-africas-economy-grows-1-1-in-2025-below-government-estimates\/","title":{"rendered":"South Africa&#8217;s economy grows 1.1% in 2025, below government estimates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s \u200ceconomy grew 1.1% in 2025, slower than the country&#8217;s central bank and National Treasury had forecast, statistics agency data\u00a0showed\u00a0on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The country&#8217;s coalition government is trying \u200bto lift the growth rate after it has averaged less \u200bthan 1% annually over the past decade<\/p>\n<p>Statistician-General Risenga Maluleke \u2060told a press conference that &#8220;1% (growth) should not send a lot \u200bof excitement out there &#8230; because such growth will not be \u200bable to contain the joblessness that we see&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The South African Reserve Bank had predicted a 1.3% increase in gross domestic product last year, and the \u200bNational Treasury a 1.4% expansion.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth-quarter growth of 0.4%\u00a0was marginally \u200bbetter than expected in quarter-on-quarter terms, but at 0.8%\u00a0on a year-on-year basis \u200cit \u2060undershot the median forecast in a Reuters poll of economists<\/p>\n<p>Five of the 10 sectors tracked by Statistics South Africa grew in the fourth quarter, and five contracted<\/p>\n<p>Growth was mainly concentrated in consumer-facing \u200bsectors, whereas primary \u200band secondary \u2060parts of the economy shrank<\/p>\n<p>Africa&#8217;s biggest economy saw investor confidence rise last year thanks to an \u200bimproving fiscal picture and the government&#8217;s commitment to \u200bkeeping inflation \u2060low<\/p>\n<p>Gross fixed capital formation grew 1.3% in the fourth quarter, the second consecutive quarter of growth, mainly driven by the private sector. \u2060But \u200beconomists say there needs to be \u200bmuch more fixed investment to meaningfully boost the growth rate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Africa&#8217;s \u200ceconomy grew 1.1% in 2025, slower than the country&#8217;s central bank and National Treasury had forecast, statistics agency data\u00a0showed\u00a0on Tuesday.
