Kenya does not expect an ongoing International Monetary Fund \u200bstaff visit to yield a lending programme \u200cat this stage, its finance minister said on Wednesday, with talks currently focused on more technical details.<\/p>\n
The \u200bteam from the Fund’s headquarters in Washington\u00a0arrived \u200bin\u00a0Kenya last week and is expected to \u2060conclude the visit later this week.<\/p>\n
Kenya’s government has \u200bformally requested a new support programme after its \u200bprevious $3.6 billion deal ended last April, but officials say they have not currently factored IMF funding into this \u200byear’s budget.<\/p>\n
Asked by Reuters if a new \u200bdeal with the IMF had been reached, finance minister John \u200cMbadi \u2060said: “No, it’s very far from it”.<\/p>\n
He was speaking at an event to announce results of an initial public offering in Kenya’s state pipeline \u200bfirm.<\/p>\n
“IMF was not \u200bcoming \u2060for any deal. They are coming for engagement,” he said, describing the \u200btalks as technical.<\/p>\n
The government, which raised $2.25 \u200bbillion through \u2060new Eurobonds last month, has been turning to securitisation of some revenue streams to fund development \u2060projects, \u200ba move that initially\u00a0curbed\u00a0\u200bits ability to strike a deal with the IMF.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
