A grouping of conservative Anglican churches will meet in Nigeria this week to elect a \u200bleader to rival the Archbishop of Canterbury, an unprecedented \u200cstep that is likely to deepen a widening theological split within the Anglican Communion.<\/p>\n
The Global Anglican Future Conference (GAFCON) \u2013 which brings together conservative churches \u200bmainly in Africa and Asia \u2013 opposes liberal shifts in \u200bparts of the Communion, including the ordination of women \u2060and greater inclusion of LGBTQ+ members.<\/p>\n
The group protested the \u200bChurch of England\u2019s appointment last October of its\u00a0first woman\u00a0Archbishop of \u200bCanterbury, Sarah Mullally.<\/p>\n
In a statement, GAFCON said its Global Primates Council would elect a chairman, to be announced on Thursday, “to serve as primus inter \u200bpares (first among equals) to replace the role traditionally held \u200bby the Archbishop of Canterbury”.<\/p>\n
GAFCON, formed in 2008, says it now represents a \u200cmajority \u2060of the world’s practising Anglicans. The Communion is made up of 46 autonomous churches, with the Church of England historically regarded as the “mother church”.<\/p>\n
Francis Aduroja, a priest from southwest Nigeria, \u200btold Reuters he \u200bexpected bishops \u2060meeting in Abuja “not to compromise the scripture” as they consider the future of global Anglican leadership.<\/p>\n
“We \u200bwant them to defend the faith of \u200bour fathers… \u2060to come back with words to encourage priests and parishioners that we are still upholding the gospel with no backing out \u2060and \u200bno compromise,” he said.<\/p>\n
